We took three football markets off the board on a Tuesday evening and added up their implied probabilities. Each of them totalled between 104 and 106 per cent. That surplus is the whole business model of a bookmaker, and it is the first thing an English-speaking bettor in Finland should learn to calculate, because it is the only figure on the screen that is genuinely under the operator's control.

Odds explained: the betting line and the margin inside it
Betting odds are shown here in decimal format by default. A decimal price of 2.30 returns 2.30 € in total for every 1 € staked, stake included. The same price in fractional terms is 13/10, which shows the profit only. Decimal and fractional odds describe the identical bet; the difference is presentation, and decimal is easier to work with because you can convert it to a probability in one step.
Divide 1 by the decimal price and you get the implied probability. Take a real three-way football betting line of 2.30 for the home side, 3.40 for the draw and 3.10 for the away side. That is 43.5 per cent, 29.4 per cent and 32.3 per cent, which adds up to 105.2 per cent. A fair market would total exactly 100. The 5.2 points on top are the bookmaker margin, sometimes called the overround or the vig.
To express the margin as a share of turnover, divide the excess by the total: 5.2 divided by 105.2 is about 4.9 per cent. Across this sportsbook and most competitors, margins on major markets typically fall between 4 and 7 per cent, wider on minor leagues and exotic markets and narrower on the biggest fixtures. That is your long-run cost of playing, and it is why a positive expected value is not on offer to the casual bettor: to break even you must beat the true probability by more than the margin, consistently, and no publicly available tip service does that.
The practical use of this calculation is comparison. Two operators showing 1.90 and 1.95 on the same selection are not offering the same product; over a season of flat stakes that gap is larger than almost any bonus.
Live betting: in-play prices and what cash out is worth
Live betting opens when the event starts. In-play markets are repriced continuously by an automated model reacting to the score, the clock, red cards, breaks of serve or wickets, and live odds therefore move faster than you can read them. Markets suspend for a few seconds around goals, video reviews and injury stoppages, and any bet you were mid-way through placing is rejected rather than settled at the old price.
Two things are worth knowing before using in-play. First, margins on live markets are usually wider than pre-match, not narrower, because the model has to protect itself against the latency between the stadium and your screen. Second, you are always behind: a television or web stream runs several seconds after the real event, so a price that looks generous may already be stale.
Cash out lets you settle an open bet early for the value the bookmaker offers at that moment, before the event finishes. It appears on the bet slip for eligible markets while the event is running. It is a genuinely useful risk-control tool, and it is also priced: the amount offered is the fair value of your position minus a further margin. Taking cash out routinely on every bet costs you more over time than letting bets run. Take it when the situation has changed in a way you would not have bet on originally, not out of nerves.
Betting bonus formats: free bet, odds boost, acca boost, bet insurance
A betting bonus is built differently from a casino bonus, and the differences matter more than the headline number.
A free bet is a stake-not-returned token: if you place a 10 € free bet at 3.00 and it wins, you receive 20 € of profit, not 30 €, because the token itself is consumed. Its real value is therefore roughly 70 to 80 per cent of its face value, and less if it is restricted to short prices.
An odds boost raises the price of a selected market, for example from 2.50 to 2.80. This is the only promotional format that can actually cut the margin on a specific bet, and occasionally reverse it. Boosts are usually capped at a small maximum stake for that reason.
An acca boost adds a percentage to the winnings of an accumulator with a minimum number of legs. Because every added leg also multiplies the bookmaker margin, a 10 per cent boost on a five-fold rarely covers the cost of the extra legs; it makes an accumulator less expensive, not profitable.
A bet insurance offer refunds a losing stake as a bonus credit under a defined condition, such as a single leg letting down an accumulator. Read whether the refund is cash or credit, whether it carries a turnover requirement, and what the maximum refund is.
